Cash For Cans Takes Off In Dorset Wednesday 6th April 2005
Local organisations benefit from new recycling scheme
Local schools and other organisations in Dorset can help the environment and make money in a new 'Cash for Cans' scheme launched by J&G Environmental to help eliminate Dorset's drinks can mountain.
The Blandford-based recycling specialists have invested over £30,000 in handling equipment for their new aluminium can recycling centre which is already in full operation.
Every year over 3 billion aluminium drink cans are thrown away in the UK with the great majority finishing up in hard pressed landfill sites.
The company says this is not just harmful to the environment but, because aluminium cans are 100 percent recyclable, it is a waste of a valuable raw material. If every used aluminium drink can sold in the UK each year was recycled it would generate over £60 million income for recyclers.
The recycling centre will not just help improve the level of can recycling in Dorset, it will also provide additional income to organisations such as offices, factories, schools, sports centres and hospitals, charities and voluntary groups. J&G pay cash for every kilogramme of cans put into special can collecting drums provided free-of-charge by the company.
When the drums are full they are collected by J&G who then sort aluminium from steel, and crush and bale the cans before despatching to the aluminium processors.
J&G managing director Steve Armstrong said: "We are very keen to expand this scheme to as many Dorset-based organisations as possible. The more drink cans we collect the more money we can return."
