Global Leader Links With J&G
Tuesday 24th February 2009
Impress Metal Packaging Ltd has appointed waste management specialists J&G Environmental to handle the collection, recycling and disposal of all general print waste generated by its Norwich site. The appointment resulted after an environmental waste audit survey, carried out by J&G at the Norwich plant, indicated areas where improvements in waste handling and disposal could be made. J&G has also started to collect some waste streams from the Impress Merthyr site and has completed an audit of the Sutton site.
The Impress Group, a global leader in metal packaging, has manufacturing plants in 21 countries, produces around 10 billion cans per year and is Europe's leading supplier of printed aerosols as well as printed metal cans for paints, coatings and varnishes. They are the second biggest manufacturer of printed cans for heat-processed food in Europe. In all these areas the company's solutions to packaging problems have ensured they supply cans to an extensive list of major brands including many household names.
J&G will handle the collection, recycling and disposal of general print waste including aluminium litho plates and chemicals as well as waste ink and empty ink packaging, plastic and steel drums, fluorescent tubes and batteries. Amenities Ltd., a company specialising in zero waste to landfill, which J&G has been working closely with for a number of years, will handle waste office paper, cardboard and polythene.
Metal packaging is one of the most sustainable packaging materials in the world and Impress believe it is important that the environmental impact of their manufacturing operations is minimised.
Steve Niblett, Norwich environmental coordinator and Paul Woodruff, UK purchasing manager, who initiated the environmental waste audit carried out by J &G, agreed that implementing the changes suggested by J&G had helped further improve Norwich's green credentials.
Mr. Woodruff said: "Working with J&G on improving our waste management procedures also allowed us to more effectively manage our costs. In particular, the substantial reduction in the volume of waste going to landfill has enabled savings to be made. We have been very impressed with the level of service provided by J&G".
Blandford- based J&G looks after the waste disposal needs of some 1500 UK print companies and has a comprehensive programme designed to maximise the amount that can be recycled - currently the figure stands at over 90 percent.
