Cash Boost for Green Initiatives
Monday 18th August 2008
The Sea View Centre and The Nuffield recycling workshop, both based in Poole, are helping the environment and receiving a welcome boost to their funds from paid-for work-based activities provided by print industry waste management specialists J&G Environmental of Blandford.
The Sea View Centre, which caters for around 90 clients with a range of severe learning and physical disabilities, receives about £1000 a year for separating the cases, paper inserts and discs from thousands of CD cases collected by J&G. The separated products are recycled into products such as drainage pipes and even new CD cases.
Centre manager Philip Mason said: "It is very important for everyone to be able to experience some kind of work experience and the simple repetitive nature of the work helps to build confidence and work skills. People certainly enjoy doing it. The income we receive from J&G enables us to provide additional facilities for people who have very high levels of disability. We greatly value opportunities for making community links with organisations such as J&G Environmental."
J&G Environmental is also working closely with clients at the Nuffield workshop which provides a workplace environment for people who have learning disabilities. Nuffield collects foil from around 40 Dorset car parks which have special containers. Clients sort and bag the foil collected in exchange for remuneration from the Blandford company which sends the foil for processing into products such as new drink cans.
Barrie Sansom, Recycling Coordinator says that the additional income is invaluable in helping them to continue their work with local disabled people in Poole.
"Without the support of local businesses such as J&G we would have to curtail some of the projects we are able to undertake in support of the Lewis-Manning Hospice."
Clients from both Sea View and Nuffield also visit J&G on educational visits which include a tour of the company's facilities. They are shown exactly what happens to the CD's and foil they work on and how this helps the environment.
