Horseback Challenge For Dorset Businesswoman Thursday 18th January 2007
Intrepid Dorset businesswoman Julie Armstrong is planning to saddle up for the ride of her life - and raise much needed funds for charity at the same time.
The joint managing director of award-winning Blandford-based waste management and recycling company J&G Environmental is planning to complete a 10-day horseback safari challenge by riding The Waterberg Trail through a spectacular area of South Africa's Northern Province.
Together with a group of other riders, she will pass through reserves, mountains and valleys, camping in the bush and viewing game from horseback.
The event, taking place in March, is designed to raise funds for two charities - the Mark Davies Injured Riders' Fund (MDIRF) and the Waterberg Welfare Society (WWS).
The MDIRF, set up in 1988 by the parents of Mark Davies who died in a fall at the Burghley Horse Trails, is a national charity helping those who have been injured in equestrian accidents. It provides victims with a range of advice and practical help such as wheelchairs and stair lifts, and campaigns to improve safety standards. The WWS was formed in 2000 to help and support HIV/AIDS victims in South Africa's Waterberg region.
Said Julie "I've been riding since the age of 10 and had some great times. This challenge seemed to be an ideal way of putting something back into the sport I love."
Julie is hoping to raise money for the charities by completing the ride and organising a range of other fund-raising events, including a Valentine Ball at Blandford's Crown Hotel on February 10. She is currently looking for sponsors and anyone interested should call Julie on 01258 453445 or email julie@jg-environmental.com for a sponsorship form.
J&G, run by Julie and her husband Steve Armstrong, who chairs the South Wessex Waste Minimisation Group, specialises in the recycling of waste from UK print companies. It holds a Queen's Award for Sustainable Development and has won other awards for its customer service and recycling programme.
