Car Crusher Helps Recycle Printers' Litho Plates
Friday 12th May 2006

Thousands of tonnes of aluminium litho plates collected from UK printing companies are now being crushed in a massive car baler before being sent to be recycled into new raw material.

Installed at a cost of some £125,000 by Blandford-based print waste disposal and recycling specialists J&G Environmental, it is the first time the Louritex baler has been used on aluminium litho plates. They are usually used to crush cars.

In operation the baler is loaded with the plates which are then compressed into 500 kilo bales by hydraulic rams exerting a force of 120 tonnes. The bales are then loaded directly on to a lorry and transported to the aluminium processing plant.

The company collects some 600 tonnes of aluminium plates from printers each month and prior to the machine's installation these were all hand stacked and strapped on pallets to be transported. The baler helps the environment by eliminating the use of wooden pallets. It has also enabled a two thirds saving in manual handling to be achieved.

J&G managing director Steve Armstrong said: "The baler is an important element in our on-going programme of investing in machines and systems that enable us to effectively and efficiently recycle printers waste. We are working towards being able to recycle well over 90 percent of all the waste we collect."
