'Crush That Ink Can' Printers Urged Thursday 10th March 2005
A leading print waste disposal company has launched a campaign to crush the industry's huge ink tin mountain down to size.
Blandford-based J&G Environmental, who handle waste disposal for 2000 UK print companies, are encouraging customers to save money and help the environment by making ink tin crushers an essential piece of pressroom kit.
The purpose-built crusher, which has just come on to the market, uses compressed air technology and no electrical installation is needed. It can take a standard industry 125mm high, 2.5 litre ink tin or up to a 30 litre steel drum and crush it to just half an inch in seconds.
Printers usually store empty tins in bulky cages prior to collection by a waste disposal company. But crushing them on site drastically reduces the volume to be taken away. A printer using 14,000 cans a year can reduce the number of collections needed from 28 to six, saving 80 per cent of transport costs.
J&G managing director Steve Armstrong said the tins had always represented a major waste disposal headache for the industry. He estimated the company picked up over five million of them a year, most of them undergoing treatment before being recycled.
"That's just from our customer base, so you can imagine just how many tins there are circulating at any one time and all of them have to be disposed of in some way. We think the crusher is a brilliant way of helping to manage the waste better."
The crusher is currently being trialled by Mitcham-based Aldridge Print Group whose Operations Director, Russell Kirby, said: "It's a great success. We've reduced our ink tin waste volume five-fold so there's less space required and a cleaner factory. It's also much more cost-effective in terms of waste disposal."
J&G now plan to offer crushers for sale to customers who want an efficient and greener way of disposing of their unwanted tins.
