St Ives Gives Recycling Top Priority Monday 6th November 2006
J&G wins group waste management contract
The St Ives general and multi-media print group has awarded a three year waste management contract to J&G Environmental, the Blandford-based print waste management specialist.
A major feature of the contract is that in addition to handling the collection, recycling and disposal of all hazardous waste, aluminium plates and fluorescent tubes, J&G will also handle redundant IT waste, ensuring it is disposed of correctly to comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive which is due to be implemented next year.
Health Safety and Environmental Adviser Geoff Court, who is responsible for determining and implementing the group's waste management programme, said the whole operation was being reorganised in order to minimise the impact of rising landfill costs by the minimisation of waste sent to landfill and the maximisation of recycling opportunities.
"With support from J&G we have identified and implemented new waste storage and handling procedures and our staff are now categorising all wastes according to their disposal requirements, as well as separating those waste materials which can be recycled.
"Having J&G on board means that we can fulfil both our Duty of Care Obligations and comply with the group's commitment to a high level of environmental management."
The new practices are proving to be highly successful said Mr. Court. The proportion of waste materials which are recycled has increased resulting in significant reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill. As a consequence, savings have been made which are likely to improve still further.
In the 2005/6 financial year St Ives UK sites showed a net reduction of just under 20 percent in the amount of waste sent to landfill compared to the previous 12 months.
"Working with J&G has enabled us to put in place a better managed and structured system with regularised paperwork which gives us a record of exactly what is happening to our hazardous and recyclable waste."
J&G's comprehensive waste management service is designed to maximise the printing industry's recycling potential. Currently some 85 percent of waste collected by the company is effectively recycled. The target is to reach 93 percent in the near future.
