Dorset Company Declares War On Waste Thursday 5th January 2006
Staff at a Dorset waste management company are practising what they preach by outlawing waste at work.
Blandford-based J&G Environmental, which encourages hundreds of companies throughout the UK to recycle their waste rather than send it to landfill sites, has pledged to set a good example by operating its own strict in-house recycling programme.
Its target is to ensure all office and factory waste - from computer parts to banana skins - is recycled or reused.
All-purpose rubbish skips awaiting delivery to the tip have gone, to be replaced by a system of labelled, colour-coded bins in which staff can drop work waste including paper, drinks cans, CDs, newspapers and computer parts. There's even a compost bin for teabags and food scraps left over after lunch in the office.
"It's zero waste tolerance here from now on," said J&G managing director Steve Armstrong, whose company specialises in the collection and recycling of waste from hundreds of printing companies.
"Most companies throw away an awful lot of recyclable materials and we advise them on how to minimise their waste, so it's essential we practise what we preach. Our staff have really got behind the new system which is working well."
J&G, whose work for the environment won a Queen's Award for Sustainable Development, also operates a scheme offering cash to Dorset schools and other organisations in return for filled drums of aluminium cans which are recycled.
