Trinity Mirror Link With J&G
Wednesday 2nd April 2008

J&G has been awarded a three year waste management contract by Trinity Mirror, the UK's largest newspaper publisher with a portfolio of over 500 media brands including 240 local and regional newspapers, five national newspapers and four sports titles.

The contract means J&G will collect all general print waste including litho plates and chemicals from all nine of Trinity Mirror's print centres across England, Scotland and Wales.

Waste management and recycling is an important element in Trinity Mirror's drive to maximise its environmental responsibilities and the J&G contract helps a commitment to identify and implement opportunities for recycling or reusing wastes to be realised.

Trinity Group Purchasing Manager Julian Kiely said: "Minimising environmental impact is very important to us. We have identified all our waste streams and, with J&G's assistance, have put in place clearly defined action plans to recycle or reuse the maximum amount possible. Waste disposal in not just a cost it can also be profitable by positive on-site management of many wastes including plates, film, aluminium cans, plastic bottles and polywrap".

J&G customer services manager Richard Spreadbury said Trinity Mirror was taking a highly responsible attitude towards its waste disposal which was in line with an increasingly environmental-conscious printing industry.

"Properly managed waste disposal is also cost effective. We reckon that a newspaper printer having to dispose of around nine tonnes of general waste a week can save around 35 per cent of the annual disposal cost if the waste is collected for recycling rather than going to landfill".

J&G looks after the waste disposal needs of some 1500 UK print companies and has a comprehensive programme designed to increase the amount of waste that can be recycled - currently the figure stands at over 90 percent.
