Environment first...
The work J&G does, and the way in which it's done, enables the company to make a practical contribution to caring for the environment.
The company has made firm commitments pledging to put the environment first in all its commercial activities. It has also accepted that it must always practice what it preaches by maintaining its own strict Environmental Management System at its various working sites. This system is accredited to ISO 14001.
Recycling and reusing as much as possible of the waste collected, and reducing pressure on landfill sites, is a key activity. The company currrently recycles and reuses 85 per cent of the by-products it collects from customers.
This includes the disposal of three million litres of printers' toxic liquid waste weekly, the annual collection of over 9,000 tonnes of aluminium litho plates for reuse in the printing and motor industry, the development of processes for recycling the entire content of thousands of fluorescent light tubes, the reclamation of silver flake from photographic negatives and fixer and huge amounts of plastic waste, wooden pallets and CDs which is reused in a range of useful products.
This activity is helping the printing industry (the sixth largest industry in the UK) to become more sustainable than it has been in the past and promoting the cause of environmentalism among printers.
Recognition of excellence...
J&G's environmental record was formally recognised in 2003 when it was awarded the Queen's Award for Sustainable Development - the first company in its sector to achieve this recognition of excellence. J&G was also the first company handling printers' waste to be awarded a Pollution Prevention and Control Permit by the Environment Agency, demonstrating that advanced environmental protection systems are in place at the company's Dorset headquarters site.
Full details of the company's environmental aims and objectives are set out in its published Environmental Policy Statement "Managing Waste and Preserving Natural Resources: J&G's Environmental Mission."
In the wider field of Corporate and Social Responsibility, J&G is actively involved in the community through a commitment to employ local people and use local suppliers where possible, as well as donating materials and funds to local charities and supporting local schools and organisations.
