Who is the Environment Agency?
The Environment Agency is one of the most powerful environmental regulators in the world. It was formed to provide a comprehensive approach to the protection and management of the environment throughout England and Wales, combining the regulation of land, air and water.
Its creation in 1996 merged the National Rivers Authority, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution, the Waste Regulation Authorities and several smaller units from the Department of the Environment. The Environment Agency's role is to ensure that our air, land and water are looked after by everyone in today's society, so that tomorrow's generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.
If you produce Hazardous Waste.
If you produce any hazardous waste you are required to register your company with the Environment Agency. Hazardous waste is any waste that is dangerous to people, the environment or animals. Under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, it is an offence to produce hazardous waste at premises, or remove that waste from premises, unless those premises are either registered with the Environment Agency or are exempt.
When you register your premises the Environment Agency give you a unique premises number called a "premises code". This is valid for 12 months from the date of registration. If hazardous waste continues to be produced or removed from these premises after the expiry date then the premises code must be renewed. You can renew a premises code up to one month in advance of the expiry date.
